TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

I have an eclectic approach to music therapy and try to provide students with the broadest possible perspective. I believe that competence as a music therapist requires extensive guided clinical experience with the representative disability groups, and my students have been placed in a wide variety of clinical settings.

Presenting music therapy students with a broad spectrum of possible music therapy philosophies and techniques encourages them to find their own direction and identities.

Individual creativity is encouraged through the application of original techniques in the clinical setting in conjunction with the appropriate quantitative and/or qualitative assessment measures. Extensive participation in group experiences is emphasized in the classroom in addition to the traditional lecture-discussion format. Collaboration in group research projects is provided, as well as opportunities for involvement in other kinds of music therapy group experiences such as projective music improvisation, multicultural musics in therapy, music and psychodrama, guided imagery, role playing, music and art therapy, and music in dance/movement therapy.
